A thrilling year is coming to an end Unbelievable - this is already our last issue of the year. There's still a lot left to report but, as usual, not enough space available. Numerous events, like BondExpo, Materialica, FAKUMA, the Photovoltaic Exhibition, Composites Europe, and the 1. PUTechEURASIA 2009 in Istanbul have taken us all over the place - the Polyurethanes 2009 conference was held in the US and we had our 3rd PU cast elastomer meeting in Leipzig. Looking at exhibitor numbers, this years' BondExpo was quite disappointing compared to last, but those who did exhibit were very pleased with the positive feedback. Despite the economic situation, Photovoltaic is still a booming industry - so no moans here at all (and in our next issue, we will report on PU applications in this field). FAKUMA may too have seen slightly lower exhibitor numbers - but the atmosphere was extremely enjoyable, even among the machinery manufacturers. During the press conferences, most felt they had reached the bottom of the recession and that things were starting to improve again, although recovery would clearly be much slower than the original slump. Well, as we all know - downhill is always much faster than climbing uphill! Although the first day of the exhibition was total chaos - not everything can be measured with "German Efficiency" - participants were very satisfied with the first Eurasian PU exhibition - sadly not me, but this wasn't the organizers fault. The Turkish postal service failed to deliver the magazines - in fact I still don't know where all the boxes are, and so the booth I had reserved made no sense at all.
If you're wondering why we aren't reporting on the PU cast elastomer meeting in Leipzig in this issue, then I can tell you that, with more than 80 participants, it was very successful - we are currently evaluating the questionnaires and working on suggestions for the next event. We'll be reporting on this fully in our first issue of 2010. For now, I would like to thank all speakers, the KuZ (Kunststoffzentrum Leipzig) and participants for a successful event, most of whom have already confirmed their attendance in two years time.
Now, it's only 7 weeks until Christmas, therefore we wish all our readers restful holidays and a happy New Year!
Birgit Harreither
P.S. We will be distributing our wall calendar again with the January issue - therefore please send us your important dates for PU related events in 2010 - we won't miss anything on purpose - we just don't have the capacity to request every single date ourselves!
